“Ikamva Labantu has taught us the importance of these things and enables us to access them. I cried tears of joy because I know my assets, such as the house, will benefit the right people. My children will not suffer when I pass away.”
Older adults in many townships often care for their children and grandchildren on a meagre pension. Many experience isolation, abuse, and neglect. They are often unaware of their rights and lack information about where and how to seek support services.
Ikamva Labantu’s latest research sheds light on the alarming prevalence of elder abuse in Cape Town’s townships, revealing that older women face higher rates and more varied forms of abuse than men.
Our support programmes and services enhance dignity, quality of life and a sense of community belonging for over 1,800 elders. Our initiatives build awareness and coping capacity through workshops and training for seniors at clubs and with the support of community-based workers.
“Ikamva Labantu has taught us the importance of these things and enables us to access them. I cried tears of joy because I know my assets, such as the house, will benefit the right people. My children will not suffer when I pass away.”
“My services bring positive change to the senior citizens as they struggle with arthritis. I use essential oils that help to detox, reduce water retention, and improve blood circulation. I recently massaged a senior who used to be reserved, after the massage he changed completely and became outgoing. He’s now the clown of the club. I finally understand what they mean by massage being holistic, it has a physical and emotional effect.”
“Cataract removal helped me to see clearly, I don’t need glasses anymore. Everything used to be so cloudy. I’m so happy I got it done.”
“Ikamva Labantu has brought warmth into my life. As an older person with no income, I sometimes have nothing at home, but here, I know I will not go hungry. Ikamva Labantu gives us care, kindness, and a sense of belonging. I come five days a week, and it has become a place of comfort and support.”
“Ikamva Labantu took me out of my lonely house and brought me to like-minded individuals. I now have people to share my problems with. I had just suffered a stroke when I joined the club but through Ikamva Labantu’s exercises my body is back to normal.”
