Thanks to generous donors, FS Systems, the Preschool Principals above from Khayelitsha are ready and equipped to use their fire extinguishers, keeping their little ones safe and secure in the event of small fires.
A small uncontrolled fire can quickly spread and become life-threatening. This situation is particularly troubling for preschools in overcrowded Khayelitsha. In honour of Mandela Day, FS Systems, our magnificent donors of many years, donated 50 fire extinguishers for preschools in Khayelitsha.
On Tuesday 24 August 2021, Ikamva Labantu’s Kwakhanya Early Childhood Development and Training Centre in Khayelitsha was the meeting place where FS System’s Alistair Witbooi and Denver Abrahams, in the picture above, handed over fire extinguishers to 29 principals, owners of their preschools. These passionate entrepreneurs use their own homes to accommodate the communities’ children, providing early childhood education within walking distance to children’s homes.
We were joined by another friend of Ikamva Labantu, the City of Cape Town Disaster Management, represented by Nombeko Kopele. Previously a firefighter, Nombeko shared her expertise in fire management and fire prevention. She demonstrated and taught the correct use of the fire extinguisher and invited all the principals to practice how to use the fire extinguishers. She educated us on how different fires originate and gave advice, for example, never turn your back to the fire but leave the extinguished fire facing it, in case it reignites.
We are incredibly grateful to FS Systems and the City of Cape Town Disaster Management for helping preventable disasters.
