A trained nursing sister, Mama Maggie was a tough but kind-hearted woman. She started working within her community in the 1970s. During a time of political turmoil, abuse and unrest, Mama Maggie was known for standing up to the security police. At the time, HIV and AIDS was considered a taboo subject and not much was known about the virus, but Maggie was a vocal campaigner and activist. She cared for HIV positive patients and respected their dignity. She was a pioneer, a brave leader and co-founder of Ikamva Labantu.
